Overview of Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3

The Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 are standalone VR headsets, meaning they don't require a PC or console to operate. They offer a blend of VR and AR experiences, creating immersive environments where users can interact with virtual content in a real-world context.

Apple Vision Pro: A New Era of Mixed Reality

Apple has created some innovative products, such as Apple Watch, but the Vision Pro is the tech giant's first foray into the world of VR and AR. It's a high-end device, offering a unique mixed reality experience. The device features a sleek design and top-tier technology, providing an immersive and surprisingly realistic experience in terms of visuals and user interaction.

Meta Quest 3: A Leap in Standalone VR Experience

The Meta Quest 3, formerly known as the Oculus Quest, is the third iteration of Meta's VR headset. It is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, offering a blend of VR and AR, known as mixed reality. The device is known for its portability, affordability, and vast gaming library.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has recently stated that he believe the Meta Quest 3 is superior to the Apple Vision Pro, referring to the motion blur and heavy weight of the Vision Pro.

Throughout this article, I will compare these two headsets in terms of their design, specifications, price, features, and more.

Price Comparison

One of the most apparent differences between the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 is their price. The Meta Quest 3 is a great product at a lower price point. The Quest 3 is the better value.

The Meta Quest 3 comes at a relatively affordable starting price of $499.99 for the variant with 128GB of storage. If you require more space, you can opt for the 512GB variant, which costs an additional $150.

On the other hand, the Apple's Vision Pro is a premium product with a price tag to match. It starts at a staggering $3,499 for the 256GB variant. If you need more storage, you can choose the 512GB model at $3,699 or the 1TB model at $3,899.

Design and Comfort

Both the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 have unique designs that prioritize both functionality and user comfort.

The Meta Quest 3 opts for a more utilitarian design with a plain white plastic front housing the cameras and sensors. Its Y-style head strap ensures a secure fit and reduces the chances of the headset sliding during sudden movements. However, some users have reported that the standard white nylon and polyester straps can feel a bit flimsy. More comfortable head straps can be purchased for the Quest 3, either from Meta or other companies.

The Apple Vision Pro boasts a sleek design with a black glass-like front housing a myriad of sensors. It has a single strap that goes around the back of the user's head, with additional controls and speakers embedded in it. The back end of the strap flares out to cradle the back of your head. There have been complaints of the Apple Vision Pro being too front-heavy and heavy overall.

Tracking Capabilities

In terms of tracking, both the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 offer impressive capabilities.

The Meta Quest 3 comes with four cameras on its front, two high-resolution RGB color cameras for mixed reality passthrough, and two IR cameras for SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) tracking. It also includes two peripheral IR cameras on the lower sides of the headset and a depth projector to improve depth perception in mixed reality experiences. The Meta Quest 3 comes with 2 controllers for tracking, while the Apple Vision Pro does not have any controllers.

The Apple Vision Pro, on the other hand, takes tracking to another level with its eye tracking. It comes loaded with 12 cameras, a LIDAR sensor, a TrueDepth camera, and IR flood illuminators. This allows the Vision Pro to support both eye and hand tracking, providing a more immersive and realistic VR experience.

Display and Audio

When it comes to display and audio, both headsets offer high-quality experiences, but with notable differences.

The Meta Quest 3 utilizes dual LCD (with mini-LED) pancake lenses, providing a resolution of 2,064 x 2,208 pixels per eye. It offers a field of view (FOV) of 110 degrees horizontally and 96 degrees vertically. The speakers are built into the headband, providing loud and immersive audio.

In contrast, the Apple Vision Pro features Apple's micro OLED displays - dual 3,680 x 3,140-pixel micro-OLED displays, offering incredible visual clarity and display resolution. However, its field of view is slightly narrower, at about 100 degrees. Like the Quest 3, the Vision Pro's speakers are built into the headband, but they also support spatial audio, providing an even more immersive audio experience.

Both VR headsets are capable of displaying spatial videos.

Performance and Software

The Meta Quest 3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, coupled with 8GB of RAM. It uses Meta's Quest operating system, based on Android, which is reliable and easy to navigate. Meta also has an iOS and Android app that allows a user to remotely start and stop casting a view of what's happening in their headset.

On the other hand, the Apple Vision Pro runs on Apple's VisionOS, providing a user interface similar to that of an iPhone or iPad. It is powered by a combination of Apple's M2 chip and its R1 chip, providing impressive processing power and responsiveness.

Mixed Reality Experiences

Apple Vision Pro vs Meta Quest 3

Both the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 offer mixed reality/augmented reality capabilities, allowing you to overlay virtual elements onto the real world.

The Meta Quest 3's mixed reality capabilities are primarily focused on gaming (although it is much more than a gaming headset), with a wide variety of VR games (such as Beat Saber) that can provide immersive experiences. Its camera passthrough system also allows you to see your real-life environment through the headset, making it ideal for mixed reality games.

The Apple Vision Pro, on the other hand, takes a different approach to mixed reality. It focuses more on productivity and entertainment, offering features like spatial computing, which allows you to perform your entire day of work inside the headset. Its camera passthrough system also provides impressive visuals, making it ideal for watching videos and movies in VR. Vision Pro users who love to play games can also play Apple Arcade games.

Battery Life

Both devices have a similar battery life, lasting about 2 to 2.5 hours of continuous use. However, the Apple Vision Pro requires a wired battery pack, which could limit mobility during use.

Conclusion

Both the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headsets are impressive devices that offer a range of unique features. The Apple Vision Pro stands out with its premium design, superior display, and focus on productivity and entertainment. In contrast, the Meta Quest 3 offers a more affordable VR experience, with a focus on gaming and a robust library of VR content.

Choosing between the Apple's headset and the meta mixed reality headset will largely depend on your specific needs and budget. If you're looking for a premium VR experience with a focus on productivity and entertainment, the Apple Vision Pro could be a great choice. However, if you're more interested in gaming as well as entertainment, and are looking for a more affordable option, the Meta Quest 3 could be the way to go.
