A Glimpse into Oheka Castle's History

The iconic Oheka Castle (one of the finest historic hotels of America), also known as the Otto Kahn Estate, was the country home of investment financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn and his family. The mansion, built by Kahn between 1914 and 1919, is the largest private home in New York and the third largest in the United States. The name "Oheka" is an acronym using the first several letters of each part of its creator's name, Otto Hermann Kahn.

Early History

In response to the exclusion of Jews from clubs and golf courses in Morristown, New Jersey, Kahn built Oheka. He was determined to build totally fireproof residential buildings, so he had his architects, Delano and Aldrich, design it. The estate's grounds, designed by the Olmsted Brothers, featured an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, a landing strip, orchards, and stables.

The Castle's Restoration

In 1984, Long Island developer Gary Melius purchased Oheka, which was in a state of almost total disrepair, and undertook the largest private residential renovation project in the United State. Today, the castle operates as a luxury hotel, wedding venue, and conference center.

The estate's grounds have also been meticulously renovated, with the same exacting attention to detail as its palatial interior.

The castle's 34 guest rooms and suites offer beautiful views of the estate and coveted amenities like an in-room massage menu and Molton Brown bath products. Guests can enjoy a delectable meal at the estate's fine-dining restaurant, Ohk Bar & Restaurant.
